TED talk - Gavin McCormick

Motion design

During Motion Design course held by professor Valerio Di Mario (Illo - motion design studio based in Turin), we had to develop a motion graphics video that needed to help representing the concepts explained during th TED Talk "Tracking the whole world's carbon emissions -- with satellites and AI", held by Gavin McCormick. After the exam, I redesigned the video to correct some imperfections of the first project.

Subject

The world needs a free and transparent instrument capable of tracking the whole world's carbon emissions, so that we can fight climate change.

The tool Gavin McCormick is talking about is composed of a series of information and data, a network capable of changing our world and helping to clean up what’s polluting the air.

Visual treatment

This tool is represented by a network composed of wires that merge information in a single medium capable of tracking pollution. It can obtain data second by second and provide useful information to everyone. The network can also be opened up to enable trust by everyone. Initially, it operates in a polluted atmosphere, but through the presence of this network, the atmosphere becomes clean over time.

Video subdivision

The video is divided in two acts: in the first one the network, which is visible through its wires, visually describes the words of the speaker and it’s surrounded by a black and white environment. In the second act, this environment becomes rich of colour, because it has been purified by the tool Gavin McCormick describes.
